CONNECTIONS

As the end of year project for year 2 at Edinburgh College of Art, the task was to write a +1500 word piece of text based on two randomly chosen words. This text was then used to design a personal publication or book of a minimum of 20 pages, using the text as a vessel to display comprehension of layout design and typography.

For my story I received the words Hats and Computer. With these words I wrote a timeline story starting in the early 1900s and ending approximately around 1980, using the words to talk about women's rights. I focused on hat fashion standards in the 20th century moved onto the suffragette movement and ended with women in computing.

The physical final book has 32 pages of text that I designed. This took two months of research and prototyping. The book is completely handmade by me, featuring screen-printed end papers, a blind debossed cover and coptic stitching. The book is A5 size (148 x 210 mm/5.8 x 8.3 in)
